Gold Leaf Pier Mirrors
The gold-leaf Pier mirrors featured in the parlor were commissioned by owner Henry Smyser in the mid 1800s and hand crafted in Italy. According to the story, gold from Henry's own California Gold Rush expedition was sent to the craftsmen in Venice and used to guild the mirrors. Smyser then had them transported by ship to the United States, and then by train from Philadelphia to York. The mirrors also serve as drape covers and plant stands, making them even more unusual.
There are two large mirrors opposite one another that span from the floor to the ceiling. The mirrors’ golden drape covers reach across the two walls. A third drape cover, matching the two Pier mirrors, crowns the third window in the parlor.
From the bottom of each Pier mirror sprouts a golden pedestal topped in marble. These are the built-in plant stands.
HGTV commissioned an appraiser to evaluate the set, and she was stunned. She said, on national television, that the set was literally one of a kind. Not only because there were two, hand-crafted, intact, gold-plated mirrors, but that the mirrors were also drape covers and plant stands. She said there was literally nothing else like this set in the world. A subsequent appraiser and archeologist agreed.
Even some of the antique Pier mirrors on display in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, St. Petersburg’s Hermitage, and Paris’s Louvre pale in comparison to this unique set.
The mirrors really do make the room. Lounging in a high back chair and gazing at the mirrors is well worth the trip to the Historic York Inn / Smyser-Bair House Bed & Breakfast.
