Points of Interest
Some visitors would consider The Historic York Inn a destination in itself. But for those who like to get out, there are a number of things to see and do.
York was our nation’s first capitol, the location of the signing of the Articles of Confederation. York became a thriving manufacturing center during the Industrial Revolution. The city has many interesting features and attractions spanning both the Colonial and Victorian periods. We invite you to explore our nation’s past and the region’s contemporary offerings with a visit to The Historic York Inn / Smyser-Bair House Bed & Breakfast.
The Historic York Inn / Smyser-Bair House is located at the heart of downtown York’s historic district, just a block away from the city center square, including the visitor’s center, museums, and the historic Central Market — named one of the top 10 historic markets in the United States by the Food Network.
The Inn is walking distance from the museums, the Strand-Capitol Theater, the York Symphony Orchestra, restaurants, pubs, clubs, the new baseball stadium, shops, the library, office and government buildings, art galleries, the college, Penn Park, the rail trail, visitors center, bus stop, even the Articles of Confederation – in the center of it all.
It’s also a great central location for an extended vacation of several day trips to such places as Lancaster County, Hershey, Harrisburg, Gettysburg, Baltimore, Washington DC, Philadelphia, and other places of interest.
There are historic markers all over the historic district of York. One of the nation’s first printing presses, run by Benjamin Franklin, was located just up the block. Across the street from us is the old Opera House, and a few buildings over is the old Bon-Ton Department Store. Here are some points of interest within walking distance you’ll want to stop by to see:
· Gates House and Plough Tavern
· Colonial Court House
· The Barnett Bobb Log House
· The Bonham House
· Central Market and Farmer’s Market
· Antique and specialty shops
· Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center and Theater
· Guided Tour Service
· Codorus River Walk and Bike Way
· Fine restaurants and casual dining
· Baseball Stadium
And you won’t want to miss these sights, located a short drive away:
· York College
· York Fairgrounds
· York Historical Society
· Antique shops around the county
· Wineries offering tours
· Outlet Malls
· The Family Heirloom Weavers
· Pfaltzgraff Pottery
· Stauffer’s Bakery

· The Strasburg Railroad
· Lake Redman and Lake Williams
· Fairs and festivals throughout the year
· Harley Davidson
· The Utz Factory
York is known as the “factory tour capitol of the world,” and for good reason.
York is a great central location if you’d like a comfortable “base” as you venture off to these nearby places just a short drive further:
